Shanghai Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom in Shanghai, recently announced that the company's broadband bandwidth will achieve 100Mbps by 2010, up from the current 4Mbps, the Sina News reported on July 6. So far, Shanghai Telecom has approximately 3.6 million broadband users and the company projects that around 80% of these broadband users, or around three million users, will be able to access 100Mbps bandwidth by 2010. Meanwhile, Shanghai Telecom stated that the company has earmarked around six billion RMB (US$882.4 million; US$1 = 6.8RMB) for boosting broadband network coverage in Shanghai within the next two years. Furthermore, Shanghai Telecom has been aggressively implementing a commercial FTTH (Fiber To The Home) network, leveraging PON (Passive Optical Network) technology, according to the same source.
